New Plymouth Airport plans for energy self-sufficiency

New Plymouth Airport is set to go off-grid by November, powered entirely by renewable energy through a new 10MW solar farm and battery storage system.

In partnership with EV infrastructure company Thundergrid, the airport will use solar energy stored in a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to power its terminal day and night.

CEO David Scott says the project supports national decarbonisation goals, reduces reliance on the grid, and shields the airport from rising electricity costs. Thundergrid’s co-founder Jonathan Zukerman adds that the initiative showcases how renewable energy and battery tech can boost national energy resilience.

The solar farm will also power 40 EV chargers for rental cars and a future public rapid-charging station at the airport.
