Welcome to New Plymouth Airport
We have transformed our 1960s airport into a modern regional gateway for almost half a million passengers a year in 2020. New Plymouth Airport proudly opened the new terminal building to its first flight on Tuesday 17th March 2020. The new terminal building was blessed by Te Atiawa on 13 March with a beautiful ceremony at sunrise. Puketapu as mana whenua hosted the blessing of close to 400 people. The terminal project consists of a new road leading you past the new terminal as well as a new carpark layout. The new terminal can cater for up to 650,000 people with an annual prediction of 450,000 people in 2020. With the added space we are able to offer a new retail space Mihi's Place and sit down café/bar Airspresso. The modular design of the new building allows for expansion as passenger numbers increase year to year. We welcome people to come out and view the terminal and look forward to seeing you all soon.

The new terminal is a unique and beautiful building that comes together through the collaboration of Puketapu Hāpu, Papa Rererangi I Puketapu, Beca Architects, and Cleland’s Construction.
The land on which the airport sits holds significant value to Puketapu Hāpu and their origin story is beautifully interwoven throughout the design of the terminal building.
The below video provides an overview of the collaboration between the parties, the history of the land, and the intertwining of the origin story into the building's design and artwork throughout.
